Introduction: Survivors of human trafficking carry the heavy burden of traumatic experiences that often haunt them long after their escape. For some, the impact is so profound that it leads to dysfunction and the development of various disorders, including severe PTSD. To contribute to the healing and restoration of dignity for those with chequered lives, the Vukarhani Trust, guided by its mantra, partnered with Munzwa Wellness to organize a transformative two-day Basic Trauma Survival Skills Training at BUSE Harare Campus on January 23-24, 2024.
Participants: Nearly 30 participants, united by their commitment to learning and healing, gathered for this essential course. The atmosphere was marked by the enthusiasm of an excellent team, willing to absorb knowledge and share their experiences.
Objectives of the Training: The primary goal of the training was to provide participants with basic trauma survival skills, a mission that was successfully achieved. Facilitators guided the group through practical steps to navigate and overcome trauma. Emotions ran high as participants shared their experiences, prompting the facilitators to identify areas requiring further attention, thereby emphasizing the importance of a healing cycle.
Activities: The participants engaged in carefully selected therapeutic activities designed to facilitate healing. The facilitators ensured that the exercises were not only relevant but also instrumental in the restoration of human dignity. “Redigging the Wells” became a powerful metaphor for participants to delve into their pasts and emerge stronger, echoing the significance of reclaiming personal integrity degraded by human trafficking.
Strengths:
- The central location for the training made it easily accessible to all participants.
- Attendees demonstrated commitment by punctuality and active participation.
- Experienced, motivated, and knowledgeable facilitators guided the sessions with expertise.
Weaknesses:
- The short time frame limited the depth of some activities, leaving participants wanting more.
- Certain activities were rushed due to time constraints, impacting the intended depth of learning.
- The venue, though central, was not conducive to activities requiring silence and minimal interruptions.
Opportunities:
- Participants have formed a support network, becoming potential basic trauma care providers for further training.
- The workshop has opened doors for additional training, especially in the realm of healing cycles, presenting an opportunity for sustained growth and support.
As we reflect on the two transformative days, it is clear that the Basic Trauma Survival Skills Training has planted the seeds of healing and resilience among survivors of trafficking. The journey has just begun, and with continued commitment and investment, the restoration of dignity and humanity will flourish, overcoming the shadows of the past.
